"Save these dates"......Sunday 18th Feb – Friday 23rd Feb 2018

Firstly, a big thank you to RPYC and Port Geographe Marina for running the event for the past 3 years.

Why did this happen?

Geographe Bay Yacht Club has no full-time salaried staff and the club is run entirely by volunteers – we are proud of our club and the history we have of “punching above our weight”.

In 2015 the club ran the Tasar Worlds – judged at the time by competitors as the “best yet”. The members upgraded the club house over the 12 months prior and then ran the actual regatta . We were stretched to say the least . RPYC and Port Geographe marina stepped up and ran GBRW….without them it would have folded.

Why was the date changed?

The original dates were set by persons who were not aware of the full event calendar that Busselton now runs … “The EventsCapital of Western Australia “  as the sign says as you drive into town.

On the 11th Feb, the Busselton Jetty swim 2500 + competitors and families – they enter months in advance to get a spot .

I rang around and found that accommodation is at a premium on what would have been the first weekend of GBRW.  We didn’t want you having to shift rooms or pay too much.  It was the best way to save you, the participants, costs and time.

How will GBRW be different this year?

Courses and Divisions

They will be all passage races with all divisions racing under Cat 6.

Trophies are for all Divisions (including IRC competitors within each fleet –provided there are 5 or more entrants)

The fleets will be

Racer / Cruiser

Cruising ( multiple divisions depending on the number of entrants)

Jib and Main

Double handed (see NOR)

Multihulls are welcome

The actual courses will be set by local sailors who know the bay (as in the 9 years prior to 2014). A major change is that the regatta on-water team and PRO will reserved the right to change the schedule according to weather  forecasts . This is a great move as it will lessen the possibility of “soldier’s courses “ or worse still being stuck in the middle in a drifter . The program is “weather flexible”

As previously mentioned GBRW is being run entirely by the Geographe Bay Yacht Club. The Club is pleased to advise the entry fee will drop to $295 for all divisions in 2018 ( it was $380 in 2017). The removal of windward/leeward courses means less start and course boats and personnel – hence lower overhead expenses. Social functions will be at the Club to help offset costs.

Where do I moor my boat?

Please contact the marina directly (08) 9754 8300 or if you wish to use their facilities  Don’t leave this until the last minute, it makes planning harder .If you end up with a pen further away from the entrance it’s probably due to the fact that the others have already been taken !

The Club is offering on-shore facilities ( showers toilets, BBQs)for those who intend to moor/anchor off the clubhouse ( Cnr Geographe Bay Rd and King St – about 1.5 kms west of the Busselton jetty) – this is done entirely at your own risk . Please note there are no public mooring buoys at the Club.

At the time of writing we have applied to the City of Busselton for a Camping Permit to allow crews to pitch a tent or park a caravan at the Club.

Please be aware that the bay has been known to  “blow-up” and one year we lost 2 days racing to strong winds. The mooring of your craft is entirely up to your discretion- the club takes no responsibility.

What is the Social program?

A work in progress being discussed with the Parrot and his highly skilled crew – however there will be a world first.

Race results will be announced each day after sailing at the GBYC Clubhouse (cnr Geographe Bay Rd and King St) . Drinks and food will be available at “Club” prices.

The Clubhouse is within walking distance to the town centre and easily accessible for those wishing to visit the many fine local restaurants and bars.

These are availabe via the above links. As I said above, the club office is not manned full-time so a little patience for your email replies would be appreciated.

All enquiries should be directed to or 08 9752 2522 .

Please DO NOT direct any of your GBRW enquiries to either the Marina or RPYC .

We look forward to enjoying your camaraderie ,yachting skills and like all race organisers, we will take the credit if the breezes are good and blame a higher authority if they’re not .

Cheers and Best wishes,

Yours in Sailing
